Sidenote

DOWNLOAD: sidenote v1.7.3

REQUIREMENTS: Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

DESCRIPTION

Sidenote tries to catch the “Stickies” spirit but in the form of a multi-document drawer that will hide in the corner of your screen (left or right). You can use it to take all your daily notes, include images and easily modify text color and font. Sidenote will automatically expand so that you will be able to drag into it any picture, text clipping or pdf file from the finder or your favorite application. Sporting notes auto-saving, you’ll never have to save your notes. Sidenote will handle that for you. You can also print them or export them to rtf.

[...] A simple notepad for writing things down, much like Apple’s Stickies. However this program is completely unobtrusive and just sits on either side of your screen until you want to use it. When you bring your mouse to the side of the screen, it pops out, you down what you want, and then it slides away. Perfectly simple and functional. Very good manager for multiple notes. It’s also free!Genius [...]

[...] When all this sorting is done, the next step would be to setup a system “that works”. Since this has been at the back of my mind for a while (see above), I have been looking for software that can handle this stuff more gracefully. Piping to a flat file with Quicksilver in an option due to it’s speed and geekiness but I’m looking for something that can preserve formatting (don’t ask me why, because I don’t know myself). Quicksilver integration would be nice but not essential. I have tried Sidenote and Journler and while the former just doesn’t feel right, the latter seems too “bulky” (although Journler does a lot more than just keep notes). Both Yojimbo and SOHO Notes (formerly StickyBrain) are Tiger only so they are ruled out (aargh… one of these weekends I should bite the bullet and jump to Tiger). [...]

Schoolhouse as you can guess is all about keeping track of school work. It has cool things like transfer assignments to iPod or subscribe to a teachers ClassCast (every teacher would do well in having an RSS assignment feed). It’s main objective is to keep track of homework and projects and such. Built in widgets course graphs and grade calculator. The grade calculator will let you put in your own values in case you aren’t graded on a 4.o scale. 8. Computers, Japan and more » No CJK in TextMate is getting annoying 12.09.06 / 9pm

[...] The last weeks one of the searches I put into the search box in Google is _TextMate CJK_ I need more and more Japanese in my texts and sometimes I’d like to use Korean which I’m learning for one year now as well. Unfortunately I find only blog entries about the bad support of CJK and that it’s unknown when it will be supported because it isn’t easy to realize. As far as I know TextMate doesn’t use the standard NSTextView (is this correct?) for its editing window. And because of this multibyte-character support has to be implemented. Multibyte-character support is necessary if you wanna see Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters on your screen – otherwise it is scrambled…like in TextMate. I even asked on the mailing list – the only answer I got was: use another editor… Hooray. Right now I’m using Sidenote where I put in some stuff and copy it over to TextMate. Not really satisfying but at least it’s some workaround because I have Sidenote running all the time anyway. While using another editor for just typing in some Japanese or Korean stuff to copy it over would be a little bit odd (even though I used originally Apple’s Textedit for exactly that) At least it seems that other people have the same trouble as me and one even wrote that TextMate would get some spreading in Japan as well (I don’t know anything about Korea but as far as I got to know Apple doesn’t have really market share in Korea…). Once more I think that it would be great to have the ability to program. But even if I could write my own progs, it would be problematic because TextMate isn’t unfortunately open source But even of its drawbacks TextMate is great and everyone who is in the need for some decent text editor should give it a try. It’s worth the €39 [...]

There’s a slight issue with sidenote in leopard that you can see in this screenshot Nothing major though since everything still seems to work just fine.

Great work with Sidenote and I hope you find time to fix this little issue.

  58. Aaron 02.11.07 / 11pm

Love the program–I just discovered it, and it’s very useful. I’m having the same minor leopard bug too, though.

  59. Mark 03.11.07 / 4am

I use this app all the time. Scrap paper for my Mac. Great!
It doesn’t work with Spaces on Leopard though. It sticks to Space 1.

    Thanks.

  60. Eric 04.11.07 / 5am

Since OSX doesn’t have Tomboy, this is the second best thing. Unfortunately, it doesn’t support Spaces which is pretty much a killer for me.

In the meanwhile, I’ll be sticking with Notational Velocity, even if it isn’t Universal. I also wouldn’t make some source code! (seriously? no source?)

  61. Aaron 08.11.07 / 5pm

Actually, it works fine with Spaces–in your Spaces preferences in system preferences, you can tell it to appear on “All spaces” (you can do this with any program), and it’ll be in whatever space you want.

  62. Mark 10.11.07 / 5am

Yeah thats how I have it set up Aaron but for some reason it only works in space 1?

  63. John Marstall 11.11.07 / 9pm

I’ve been looking for something like this for some time. So far I think you’ve struck a great balance of simplicity and usefulness. Under leopard there is a small GUI glitch in the toolbar, see here: toolbar glitch

  64. Ephilei 12.11.07 / 2am

I love this app! I can confirm the GUI bug and the Space 1 only bug in Leopard (at least when using the mouse hover call).

Great little app! I notice some minor errors on Leopard.. ui glitches and also incompatibility with spaces. If you plan on updating this, please let us know.. I’d be happy to donate for your time!

  70. Isa 19.11.07 / 2am

I really like the program but I would prefer a more minimal interface (when it is shown) like Stickies.

  71. Amanda 20.11.07 / 12am

Adding my voice to the requests for a Leopard update to get rid of the little GUI glitch (not so bothered about Spaces since I don’t use it…). And, yes, I’ll happily donate again to get the update.

Even with the glitch it’s a fantastic app – I’d find it hard to live without it now. Thank you!

Open Source it please if you’re not going to continue developing it!

  73. Jeff 21.11.07 / 5am

Been using this since way back. Glad to see it (basically) works in Leopard. I have always wished that notes could be sorted into folders… Great job!

  74. Burrton Woodruff 02.12.07 / 1pm

I’m quite fond of Sidenote and would contribute for an update. I confirm the two glitches (GUI problem at the preferences button and sticks to spaces 1).

Another thought would be for the drawer to shrink in vertical size when closed so there would be less target for my accidental mousing to the edge of the screen.

  75. Stephan 07.12.07 / 3pm

This little app is fanastic. Used it for months. Now, I’m dying, because I use Leopard and Spaces, so I’ve lost Sidenote. :-(

Let me know when it’s Leopard compatible!

  76. Hellmark 11.12.07 / 10pm

I love using Sidenote on my mac. I just am not on OSX all the time, with Linux being what all my other machines run. Anyone know of something comparable for Linux?

  77. mcb 13.12.07 / 4pm

Is there a way to move sidenote files from one computer to another? I have tried copying them to/from the Library>Application Support>Sidenote folder (where they seem to reside), but they don’t show up.

    Any ideas, anyone?

  78. Ryan 22.12.07 / 4pm

Excellent app that I’ve been using for quite a while. Just confirming the GUI bug. I don’t use spaces, so that’s not an issue for me, but I’d be willing to chip in too to make this fully Leopard compatible.

  79. Nathan 25.12.07 / 1am

I love sidenote, but, like everyone else, would really appreciate a Leopard update. It seems to work fine, but the UI glitches are an annoyance.

  80. MontBlanc 26.12.07 / 5am

I love this app. Definitely a feature that was missing in OS X… kind of like the best parts of stickies and notepad all in one.

A couple things that would be nice:

Different timers for open and close. I would like to have it instantly open, but give me a second to close since it seems overly sensitive to me mousing out of the note area.
Multiple note instances (two or three drawers) would be a nice option.
Having the option to view notes as tabs ala safari/firefox/etc. would be nice.

Also… I run dual displays… when I try to move the drawer off of the left side of the main display… I see the animation… but the drawer vanishes completely. Even the hotkey won’t make it visible. I can see it getting focus, but it doesn’t show up. I would much prefer just being able to drag the drawer and drop it wherever I wanted (top, bottom, other display, etc.) than having a “switch sides” button.

I would also like the ability to make this a visible foreground app so I could simply switch to it with the cmd+tab if desired… or maybe even a menulet where I could pull up preferences. But that’s a minor thing.

    Overall, very nice work!

  81. Pierre Chatel 29.12.07 / 9pm

    2. Move mouse out, Sidenote hides, click on any other apps, active it again, the “I” cursor becomes sticky. Every mouse click will behave like press “shift” + click, which is block selection.
    3. Couple of more times later, mouse moving couldn’t active Sidenote anymore.

Anyway, I do love this little app so much. I’m still using it with reloading it again and again.

    Thanks again to Pierre!

I figured out why it won’t open when you drag your mouse to the side. Your windows are probably maximized so it takes up the entire screen and that’s why Sidenote won’t open up.

It was doing this to me as well but I figured that I should use Expose to see if the program was still active (it was) and I just figured to very slightly resize the window on my screen (in this case it was my browser: Camino) and with the slight exposure on the side, Sidenote opened up. (I use it on the right side)

It also didn’t like that a window underneath was fully maximized as Sidenote would respond only if all windows had a the slightest space between it and the screen edge. I had several programs maximized and once I resized them slightly, Sidenote would reappear.

I should add that this is one of the most indispensable tools on my MacBook Pro. This program is one of the reasons why I use a Mac. Excellent work, Pierre.

Same problem as Chuck, Cerberus etc. Version 1.7.3 won’t work.

    Would like Version 1.7.2 back.

  96. Pierre Chatel 06.01.08 / 8pm

For those with problems on 1.7.3, try removing the org.chatelp.sidenote.plist preference file and relaunching sidenote.

  97. Forrest 11.01.08 / 10am

Thanks for the update, Pierre! Once again my laptop is in top form, and I have you to thank. Sidenote is a wonderful marriage of form and function. It’s one of the truly great pieces of OSX software out there. I’m waiting for Apple to buy it off of you and cut you a fat check, because OSX is lacking whenever it’s not installed.

  98. Ray Hewitt 11.01.08 / 6pm

I’ve just installed Sidenote – I think. I dragged the application from the disk image into Applications, put Sidenote in the Startup Items list and restarted my iMac.

Mousing around the edges of the screen doesn’t produce anything. I am running Mac OSX 10.3.9.
    What have I missed?

    Dear Pierre.

I am working on an ibook G4 almost every day for at least 5 hours using OS X 10.4.11. Right from the beginning I had problems with the stickies application, some bug that seemed to be unremovable. I won`t bother you with details, but be sure, that I tried a lot to make it work. I did not succeed.
Today I found your sidenote application, loaded it down and wanted to tell you, that I am more than happy with it. It is exactly what I have been looking for within the last years. Thank you very much for sharing it.
I bookmarked your homepage to keep myself updated with your work.

    All the best to you,
    C. Berg.

  101. Bart 14.01.08 / 8pm

    Pierre,

Thanks for a great little program. When I upgraded to 1.7.3., it doesn’t work properly anymore. It won’t activate if I have another window on the edge of the screen.

Sidenote is an excellent little application that I’ve been using for sometime now but at least in v1.7.3 there seems to be some strange “arrows” that can be seen when using Expose (please see: http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/9839/ihmexk6.png). I haven’t found any use for that in Tiger, it just takes unnecessary space in Expose on my small screen. Probably something to do with spaces in Leopard? Otherwise it’s just perfect! My problem is that I can’t find older versions anywhere and I would like to downgrade Sidenote to get rid of that. Can I download an older version somewhere or can I just get rid of it somehow? Thanks in advance!

  109. Ray Hewitt 10.02.08 / 5pm

In the absence of any guidance to the problem I mentioned on 11 January, I guess I may as well dump Sidenote in the trash. Pity- everyone else thinks it’s great.

  110. Charles Pitts 12.02.08 / 11am

    Pierre,
I have used Sidenote practically every time I used my computer for years, and I really appreciate it.
All I would ask to make it better for me is to have the ruler on/off and line spacing settings saved from session to session. The default line spacing is too big for my taste, and it’s a bother having to re-set it from a submenu each time I reboot.
Thanks also for making the data files accessible.
    Merci beaucoup.

Is there a trick for getting Sidenote to work with a multi-monitor environment, when my main monitor is the middle of three?

  112. Nathan Smith 14.02.08 / 4pm

I would like to thank you for this program. I’ve been using it for quite a while now, and it’s extremely helpful.

I do have one little annoyance, lately. Sidenote won’t stay on top. I usually lock sidenote open when I’m using it. When I change focus to another application that covers it, it goes behind that application, and I have to either close the drawer and open it again or find it using expose. OS 10.5.2, same thing happened on 10.5.1.

    Thanks again

  113. John Staplehurst 29.02.08 / 11am

Having the same problem with 1.7.3 – if there are apps whose windows overlap sidenote’s launch ’strip’, then sidenote will not pop out. Hiding those apps, or moving their windows, lets sidenote operate correctly again. Using exposé to reveal sidenote’s hidden switcher window puts sidenote back on top until focus returns to a maximised window. OS 10.4.11

I would like to thank Pierre for this app, up till now it’s worked great and has helped me organise my work a bit better!

  114. Haans 16.03.08 / 12am

I like it very much but has one important flaw. That is, the note window will not override, for instance, the firefox window, if the firefox window is maximized. Things work ok, however, when the firefox window is not maximized (when it doesnt touch the very left of the screen). But what the programme really should do is to activate the stickynote whenever the left of the screen is touched with the mouse cursor. This it does only when the left of the screen is uncovered by another window. But it should do it always.

    Fantastic work anyway..

Thanks very much for creating and continuing to support Sidenote, Pierre!

Unfortunately, I’ve had to revert back to 1.7.2 after experiencing the same problem as Chuck, Libin, RJ, John Stapleton and others – application windows positioned right up against the left edge of the screen seem to prevent Sidenote from opening (Firefox 3.0b4 seems to be a particular culprit for me, since it defaults to a “maximised” window size).

I’ve tried trashing my preferences file as you suggested, but unfortunately the problems persist. Fortunately, 1.7.2 seems to work fine on Leopard apart from the minor graphical glitch.

Again, thanks for all your efforts.

    Keep up the great work!

I used to use Sidenote a lot but now I have a problem.

I have a two monitor setup and want my dock on the left side. So I’m forced to put sidenote to the right. Unfortunately my second monitor is smaller with a lower resolution so sidenote sits in the lower right corner of my 2nd monitor just half visible.
Is there something you can do to display sidenote in the center of the right edge on a second monitor even if both monitors have different resolution?
    Left monitor: 1920×1200
    Right monitor: 1280 x 800

    Thank you for Sidenote!

WHAT ABOUT THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN?

  126. Daniel 24.04.08 / 9pm

i just want to start out by pointing out that this is a 5 out of 5 overall, and that i gave EOU and features rating a 4 and a 2 respectively. thats because im hoping the people who made this will pay attention to these because this app is so close to being the perfect note-taker:

    - i would like the ability to copy and paste screenshots into and out of the note when it pops up. sometimes i just need to hold a screenshot where i can see it until i decide where i want to use it for good. in essence the note-taker would act as a visual clipboard.

    - i wish i could adjust the timing of the open and close separately. it gives me the option to choose whether i want to open with hotkeys only or close with hotkeys only, but it groups the popup/close delay as one setting. sometimes i would like it to open faster and close slower using my mouse. that way i can use my mouse to bring it up immediately and go and grab what i want to paste it into the note w/out it closing on me real fast.

    - yes i would like the option not to have/adjust the auto-save option. i usually end up saving it manually if i think its that important anyway.

-overall, using the drag menu to navigate between notes when the note is open is pretty easy.

    - i do wish that right underneath the drag menu, the icons were on the bottom instead. if this would get rid of the drag pad that is already at the bottom, then this would be a problem (since i like to sometimes move it up and down the side), but maybe the drag space can be put somewhere else (or hopefully it wouldnt interfere with it).

    - yes, the expose thing is annoying but i can deal w/ it in the shortrun

this is like the only 6 things out of the maybe 8 that are stopping this from being the most functional/useful note-taking app out there. its already the best, in my opinion, but that doesnt mean it cant still be made better.

Lovin this app. Have a (minor?) request, though. I use hotkeys to manipulate sidenote, and wish the manage notes list got focus when I switch to it so I could scroll through my notes with the keyboard arrows without having to grab for the mouse and click it into focus, first.

Any way i can change that by tweaking it with interface builder? Thanks.

  130. Alex 22.05.08 / 8pm

I downloaded Sidenote and really wanted to like it, but found it unusable, unfortunately.
I find myself inadvertently hitting the screen edge and opening the drawer all of the time. And I can’t use hotkeys exclusively for opening either because I would have to make *all* of them system-wide. I’d like to have only the “open drawer” hotkey available system-wide, the others application-wide. The reason ist that I find myself inadvertently doing operations on my notes when hitting system-wide hotkeys by accident. The drawer doesn’t even open when you use a system-wide hotkey other than “toggle drawer”.
Please add a different set of system-wide and application-wide hotkeys or make the settings of different hotkeys independent of each other.
Otherwise, it would have been a fine app.

This is a slick program… One suggestion, if I might, would be to let the user choose which side it’s on the first time it starts… I keep my dock on the left, and had to move it in order to get to Sidenote. Not too big of a deal (just had to move Sidenote and then move the dock back) but would still be a bit more convenient if the choice was given.

  144. Mike 20.06.08 / 4am

I love the app! Very handy, but I have one suggestion.

The application does appear on all spaces, but you have to set up Spaces properly. When you start sidenote, it appears in the Spaces preference as “Unknown application”. You need to remove this entry, then use the “+” key to add an application and choose Other. Then select sidenote.app from the finder window and assign it to all spaces. (At least this is what worked for me).

I’m finding Sidenote quite helpful, but could you consider changing the save options to (include) always auto-saving any changes? Only saving manually or auto-saving when switching notes means…

    1. new unsaved notes or any changes aren’t backed-up with Time Machine (or anything else!)

    2. if the machine crashes/loses power, changes are lost

I love SideNote and have used it for a long time now, but I have a complaint about the Leopard version vs. the older one. When using the latest version in leopard, if I hit the Exposé button, a blank space the size of Sidenote with the Sidenote switch logo shows up. Since I use Exposé all the time, I don’t like seeing that little thing cause it takes up screen space when all windows are shown. I would go back to the old version (and I did for awhile) but it’s been a little buggy lately…

Anything you can do about this?

    Thanks,

    Brian

  175. sidenote lover 29.08.08 / 12am

Hi. I love Sidenote and have been using it for years. It seems like version 1.7.3 is buggy on my system: Macbook Pro running on Tiger. I upgraded from 1.7.1 and now it seems to freeze my computer when it goes to sleep which causes me to lose all the latest changes made on Sidenote on reboot, and deleted notes to come back as blank notes.

Is there a previous version of Sidenote that I can download anywhere? Thanks.

  176. sidenote lover 29.08.08 / 1am

Ok. I figured out the download link for 1.7.1:
    http://www.chatelp.org/sidenote/sidenote_1.7.1.dmg

Also, pierre, I think others have mentioned this to, but with 1.7.3 I also noticed than when using expose a white box with blue arrows would show up whereas it doesn’t with 1.7.1.

  177. sidenote lover 29.08.08 / 7pm

Pierre. Reverting to 1.7.1 got rid of the computer freezing when put to sleep mode problem, but it’s still behaving strangely. I had managed notes in the order that I like but it was reset alphabetically overnight.

    Trying 1.7.2 now.

  178. sidenote lover 30.08.08 / 11pm

One problem I’m still having that wasn’t there before is that if I bring up sidenote after my computer had been sleeping or shut off, or if sidenote itself is opened after quitting, now it opens with the buttons Continue and Quit with the explanation about the changes in the new version of sidenote. I’m using 1.7.1 right now and this never happened when I was using 1.7.1 before.

awesome app! you should really get i so it will work with sync services though! i need my sidenote notes on iphone/bb!

  180. adam king 02.09.08 / 2am

Also, just noticed this… Since upgrading to Leopard, all of the hotkeys now show up for me as “Error” and seem to not hold after closing and opening the Preferences again. On a MBP 2.4ghz running 10.5.4. Frustrating, am a universal hotkeys mavel, using sidenote for my quick idea braindumps.

    Quicksilver, OmniFocus, Sidenote.
My triune gods of Mac productivity. Please keep this app in active development!

  182. straycat 14.09.08 / 4am

    hi.

i noticed sidenote hasn’t been updated in some time and after reading your posts i got to the same conclusion:

1.7.2 has the gui glitch but pops out with maximized windows

1.7.3 doesn’t have the gui glitch but doesn’t pop out with maximized windows

so i had this crazy idea about joining the two.
i went into package contents of 1.7.3 and moved

    Resources
    Info.plist
    Pkginfo

    into 1.7.2

The result is a new 1.7.3 without the glitch, which gains foucs even with maximized windows and doesn’t show blue arrows on expose.

i even uploaded it for you. you’re welcome.

  183. Joan 15.09.08 / 6pm

I depend on Sidenote, also. But since I’ve upgraded to Leopard (and upgraded to 1.7.3), the drawer doesn’t always open. I have to go to the applications folder and double-click on Sidenote; then it opens once or twice, until I go to another application. Then it doesn’t open again, until I do the applications folder thing again.

  184. straycat 16.09.08 / 4am

try the link i provided, joan. it’s a modified 1.7.3.
i have leopard 10.5.4 too and with this version it fixes your problem.

  187. sidenote lover 28.09.08 / 1am

straycat, thanks for the 1.7.3 fix. Strangely, I still have this 1.7.1 info page that pops up everytime I open sidenote after reboot. Here’s what I’m talking about:
    sidenote 1.7.1 info page

Do you know how to fix it so that it doesn’t show up anymore? I’ve tried deleting the preference file but that did nothing. Thanks.

  188. straycat 29.09.08 / 4am

    hi sidenote lover.
strangely i never got that info page but it could be because i have the splash screen disabled in preferences or because i changed the path of my notes repository to Users/Damazio/Documents/sidenote.

As the info screen says it’s always moving your database to Application Support try to copy your notes from ~/.sidenote to ~/Application Support/sidenote and then change the path in preferences to this location.

let me know if it worked.

  189. sidenote lover 29.09.08 / 9am

hi straycat. The splash bezel option in preferences just seems to be and opening splash logo shown when the app is run, and not the info page I’m referring to. I just tried changing the path in preferences after moving it to my Documents directory but sidenote won’t let me change anything in the Notes repository text box or the Set Repository… button.

  190. sidenote lover 29.09.08 / 9am

update: I think I fixed it. I noticed at first that along with the Application Support’s sidenote directory, I still had the hidden .sidenote directory. When I moved the Application Support’s sidenote directory to documents and restarted, sidenote created another sidenote directory in Application Support and deleted the .sidenote directory. I then quit again, and moved the backed up sidenote directory from Documents to the one in Application Support. When I restarted, it no longer showed the info page and behaves like it used to. Yay!

  191. straycat 30.09.08 / 8am

that’s great snlover! it was the old .sidenote folder afterall.
a good working copy of sidenote at last. have fun.

  192. CaptSaltyJack 04.10.08 / 3am

New glitch introduced in 1.7.3: when invoking Exposé, sidenote shows up as a white window with two blue arrows on it. The older version didn’t used to do this.

  193. Marco 09.10.08 / 4am

Can you PLEASE fix the blue arrows / transparent window on expose? Could I offer any incentive?

  194. straycat 09.10.08 / 11pm

CaptSaltyJack & Marco, have you seen my post above?

    Shame on me, I guess.

I see that my previous negative comment has been deleted, so I don’t expect this one to get posted either, but I recently decided to give sidenote a second chance, hoping that the fact that my notes were deleted last time was a fluke, and that the functionality would be worth it. I was wrong, and my data’s gone. Again.

Btw, did the old version work in spaces?

can anyone confirm if spaces ever worked on sidenote?

this app is exactly what i needed a million thanks. when i started using it i had this thought. i do not know how hard this sounds, but, wouldn’t it be great if when you drop an image into a note it resized to fit the width of the window?

I have used Sidenote regularly for over a year, and it is a very useful app. But it has encountered some conflicts with new apps I have added, and now has stopped working altogether.

The first conflict was with TELEPORT. Teleport was configured to use the right screen edge to move the mouse to my next computer screen, and at that point Sidenote wouldn’t open from the right edge (even though Teleport used a helper key and Sidenote didn’t).

So I moved kSidenote to the left edge and all was well most of the time. But, over time it wouldn’t always open by moving the mouse to the left edge and I would have to run the Sidenote app first before it would behave.

Now, I cannot get Sidenote to open at all. It runs (according to the Activity Monitor) but doesn’t open. So, I can’t even reach the prefs to change its behavior. I have looked but cannot find the pref file in the Finder. I thought it might have gotten corrupted and I could fix the problem by deleting it.

    Hi,

really like your little program sidenote, but there are some suggestions for improvement:

    1) float above everythiing
    2) separate settings for pop up and close (no limitations)
    3) password protection and encryption
